Decorating your Montana home with Christmas lights is one of the fun parts of the holiday season.  It can add real beauty and wonder to your home for the month.  But what does all of that pretty cost you?

It's hard to say for sure, but Today's Homeowner gave it a good run to find out.  Here's how they did it:

We analyzed each state’s estimated cost of powering Christmas lights in 2021 and 2022. We first took each state’s average house footage and electricity rate, and then researched the most common decorations used by American households, based on some of the most popularly bought items from The Home Depot. This included the following:

  • Three to five sets of hanging icicle lights that are 13.25 feet each.
  • Two sets of string lights that are 28.8 feet each for columns and entryways.
  • Two 6-foot inflatable yard decorations.

With this data, we calculated how many Christmas lights were needed to light each home and how much it would cost to power them. The price associated with each state is the total cost to power lights from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day.

The findings this year say that Montana has dropped in price to run Christmas lights from 2021 to 2022.  They say the price has dropped by 1%.  (I'm stunned by this figure as our utility rates have been steadily going up.  Read:  MTPSC votes to increase rates for Montana consumers.)

The total cost expected for the Montana consumer this Christmas season is around $13.70.  Ten cents less than it would have cost to run the same lights last year.  If you want to get down and dirty calculating the cost, check out this article from Christmas Light Set. But above all, enjoy those gorgeous lights of yours.  You did a great job and it's only for a month.
