Names.  It's the one thing your parents give you that lasts a lifetime. (Sure you can change it, but how many people do you know that actually HAVE?  Exactly.)

The University of British Columbia says this about names, and I think it's a perfect way to say how important they are:

Our names are an incredibly important part of our identity. They carry deep personal, cultural, familial, and historical connections. They also give us a sense of who we are, the communities in which we belong, and our place in the world

When choosing a name for my daughter, I went to great lengths to find a name that was unique and cool (and unisex).  I thought I found a name that was perfectly unique and beautiful, Taylor. Turns out that in 1994, a lot of parents thought that was a unique name for boys and girls.  There are SO MANY Taylors in her generation it's almost embarrassing, (Like Tammie for my generation.  Could there BE any more Tammys?) and she hates it.  I still love it, but the person "wearing it" hates it.
