Necessary Travel Only In Lincoln County, Montana

Wednesday, December 10, 2025 heavy rain was falling in Lincoln County and it just snowballed.

Rain continued to fall, snow continued to melt and bridges washed out, roads were compromised and residents and visitors to the area were being driven from their homes.

Here's the latest on what's happening:

  • A flood watch was issued for Northwest Montana through this afternoon.
  • Governor Gianforte has promised Emergency Services deployed to help first responders.

Montana Department of Transportation has reported road closures:

  • US 2 between Libby and Kalispell
  • Montana 56 between Libby and Noxon
  • Other secondary roads in the county are closed

Rivers that are reported flooding:

  • Yaak River by Troy has risen about 5 feet in the last 2 days. As of writing, the river is at 8.2 feet, above the flood stage of 8 feet
  • The Fisher river by Libby has risen around 4 feet since Monday. As of writing it's at 6.8 feet. Officials are expecting it to hit minor flood stage of 7.6 feet today.

The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office has reported portions of Libby Creek Road as washed out along with these bridges:

  • Granit Creek bridge on Big Cheery Creek
  • The bridge on Farm to Market Road over Libby Creek
  • Keeler Creek Bridge

Other Key Points to note:

  • There is a boil water advisory for Libby
  • School children in Troy and Libby have been sent home for the day
  • There is no school in Libby on Friday, December 12, 2025
  • Middle school basketball has been cancelled
  • Freshman basketball jamboree in Polson has been cancelled due to flooding
  • Active evacuation order for Tailback Road in Troy

  • Wilkinson Hall at the Assembly of God Church, 105 Collins Avenue in Libby
  • If you're looking to bring your large animals to safety, go to the rodeo grounds at J. Neils Memorial Park, Montana Highway 37, Libby

Widespread flooding wiped out roads, bridges, buildings, and powerlines throughout riverside communities from Yellowstone National Park and Paradise Valley to Red Lodge. The Yellowstone River winding through Billings crested Tuesday, June 14, 2022. At 11:30 a.m. the National Weather Service in Billings reported the river rose above flood stage and was forecasted to hit 14.7 feet, nearly hitting the 15-foot record set in 1997.
