I Have An Emergency Kit In My SUV
Anyone who's lived their entire lives in Montana has a few things for emergencies in their vehicle. In my SUV I have:
- WD-40
- First Aid Kit
- Jumper Cables
- Car candles
- Matches
- Blankets
- Crackers
- Protein Bars
- Wrench and a Screwdriver
- 3 1/2 full bottles of not-for-human-consumption water
- Toilet paper
- paper towels/rags
- Seatbelt cutter/window breaker in the glove box
These things make me feel safer (however I see I need a flashlight). Also, just to prevent messes, I leave all water and food in a reusable grocery bag. That way if something blows up or whatever, it's contained.

What Things Should Never Be In A Montana Car In The Winter?
According to Capitol One Navigator, these are things you shouldn't leave in your car in the winter.
- Medication: It can lose efficacy when exposed to extreme temperatures
- Canned goods: Freezing can cause the contents to expand and contract damaging the container and possibly leaving quite a mess
- Eye Glasses: Plastic in glasses can become brittle in the cold
- Electronics: Batteries can loose their power in the cold. Have a backup charger stored for emergencies
- Musical Instruments: Instruments made of wood can crack in the cold, and the sound of a brass instrument can change after being frozen
- Aerosol Cans: These cans can crack or explode in the cold
- Beverages: Drinks expand when frozen. This can lead to cracked or exploding bottles.
