Montana Is The Ultimate Coolcation Destination
- Coolcations are taking the travel industry by storm
- It was 2024 that taking Coolcations really took off
- It's not a winter trip, it's a normal vacation only to a cooler place instead
- Montana is a hot spot for Coolcations
What Is A Coolcation?
A Coolcation (combining the words cool and vacation) is literally a summer vacation in a place with cooler temperatures than the traveler is currently experiencing where they live.
As The Heatwaves Get Worse, Travelers Are Looking For Cool
Reader's Digest has listed the 8 most popular traffic destinations for Coolcations in America.
Reader's Digest talked with VRBO and Expedia about this travel trend. In countries like Norway, they're seeing a 400% increase in summer reservations.

Where Are Coolcation Hot Spots In America?
Before I give you the actual list I was kind of surprised to see Montana as a coolcation hot spot considering it feels as fiery as the lowest depths of hell here in the last few years for a couple of months. Then, I saw WHERE in Montana it was and I totally get it.
Oregon is on here twice. That doesn't seem shocking at all. When I lived in Coos Bay, Oregon, their worst weather is the closest thing to perfect weather I've ever seen.
America's Coolcation Hot Spots
- Breckenridge, Keystone and Copper Mountain in Colorado
- Bend and Lincoln City, in Oregon
- Flathead National Forest and Glacier National Park in Montana
- Seattle, Washington
- Bar Harbor, Maine
- Poconos, Pennsylvania
What Are Common Activities On A Coolcation?
Honestly, they aren't that different than a warmcation, there are just more clothes. You can still go horseback riding, hiking, sit in a mineral pool, eat at nice restaurants, shop in little local boutiques and more. You just don't sweat as much.
