A Huge Boulder Sits Next To Westbound I-90 Near Butte
If you're travelling I-90 near Butte any time in the next few weeks, be aware that there is a huge boulder on the shoulder.
KXLF in Butte spoke with Butte District Administrator Geno Liva with the Montana Department of Transportation. Liva said “It’s close to the road, so the potential if someone goes off the road, that it would be a danger."

The boulder has been compared to the size of a garbage truck.
What Is The Montana Department Of Transportation Doing To Remove The Boulder?
Geno Liva goes on to explain that they've tried breaking down the boulder with tools like hammers and excavators to no avail. Now they're looking at the possibility of bringing a contractor in to drill and break the boulder, or maybe even blow the massive rock up into pieces.

“For safety purposes, we’ll close all four lanes for a short period while we blast it, and once we get it clear, everything’s safe, we’ll release traffic.” Geno Liva

Liva expects finding a contractor and then removing the boulder may take another week or so. He urges drivers to exercise caution when driving on Homestake Pass.
