I love St. Ann's Cathedral in Great Falls. Oh, I'm not Catholic or anything. I don't think I've ever even been inside the building. I just LOVE the building for its aesthetics.

I mean, just look at her.

When I see it, I wonder how it got here and why such a beautiful building is hidden in a neighborhood in Great Falls.

A Brief History of St. Ann's Cathedral In Great Falls

From Kiddle:

  • St. Ann's began as a small brick church in the 1800's. (Now, that space is the Heisey Youth Center)
  • In 1904 the Diocese of Great Falls was created and St. Ann's was the cathedral.
  • Between 1906 and 1907 the current stone cathedral was built
  • The cathedral was designed by Helena architect, John H. Kent, in the Gothic Revival style with the arches, bell tower and cruciform plan
  • The cathedral cost around $100,000
  • The stone for the cathedral is from a quarry near Stockett
  • At the time it was built, it was the biggest church in Great Falls, Montana
  • The rectory was built in 1931
  • In 1980, the Pope renamed the diocese to "The diocese of Great Falls-Billings" and St. Patrick's Church in Billings is a co-cathedral with St. Ann's
  • The church's pipe organ was built in 1929, and restored in 1995
  • In 1991 St. Ann's was added to the National Register of Historic Places in Great Falls North Side Residential District
Although I've never been on the inside, I have stopped by the church a time or 2 to take a look at it or snap some pictures. I'd wager it's just as beautiful if not more beautiful on the insides. Catholic churches are always so pretty.
