Whispers Of A Sales Tax Resurface Amid Montana’s New Influences
Montanans, The Fight Against A Sales Tax Is Back
We need to talk. People, who most likely aren't Montanans by birth, are bringing up a sales tax again.
What scares me most about this time, is there are a bucket full of out-of-staters buying up land and citizenship in Montana, and they vote. They vote on things they know NOTHING about except, "We have sales tax where I come from and it's fine."

For The Out-Of-Staters In The Back: A History Of Montana Saying No To Sales Tax
- Back in 1968 Montana Governor Tim Babcock was pro sales tax and was promptly voted out of office
- In 1971 Montana voters had to choose between a sales tax and an income tax surcharge and Montanans OVERWHELMINGLY chose the surcharge
- In 1989 Governor Stan Stephens tried to get a 4% sales tax in Montana and it failed
- In 1993 Governor Marc Racicot again tried to get voters to pass a 4% sales tax, this time promising lower property and income taxes. Montanans overwhelmingly said no by 74.9%
- In 2019 Governor Steve Bulloch tried to make it against the law to have a sales tax in Montana. (For the love of God, didn't we vote that in?)
The President And CEO Of The Montana Chamber Of Commerce Wants The Sales Tax
Scott O'Hair thinks Montanans need to "take a deep breath and ponder swallowing that pill." (sales tax)
In reading the article on Montana Free Press, it appears that O'Hair is very concerned that we are taxing businesses right out of Montana and it's time for us to pay so businesses profit.
Yeah. We've had our fill of guys like you saying things like this to us.
O’Hair said this week that higher property taxes could threaten the viability of the state’s remaining natural resource companies — especially if lawmakers continue shifting taxes from homeowners to industry in the years to come.

All Of The Recent Transplants To Montana Could End Up Passing This
Even Gianforte knows Montanans are being taxed WAY too much and prices are going up way too fast on EVERYTHING.
The good thing is, it's in our constitution that if we ever get a sales tax it can't go above 4%.
The bad thing is our legislators passed that instead of making a sales tax on Montanans illegal.
Montanans take a deep breath, and consider how we can defeat this, again, together. It's coming.
