Updates To Popular Going-To-The-Sun Road Drive In 2024
Yearly, around 3 million people from all over the world go to Glacier National Park. No surprise as it's one of the most beautiful spots in the entire world. However, the popularity of the park and in particular, the Going-To-The-Sun Road, caused some problems for tourists and the park. To try and remedy the situation, Glacier Park implemented some changes in 2021. For those of us born and raised in Montana, some of the changes are pretty big and anger inducing, like requiring a reservation to drive the Going-To-The-Sun Road.
The pubic outcry has been pretty loud. Back in August, I wrote an article about how the park was holding a couple of meetings near Glacier and had a window where the public could comment on the reservation system, and a few other things. You can get familiar with that here.
You Spoke, Glacier National Park Listened
From Montana Right Now, starting in 2024, Glacier National Park is implementing updated changes they say are based on feedback from Tribes, the public, partners, and stakeholders.
According to The Flathead Beacon, the biggest changes will effect driving the Going-To-The-Sun Road. Instead of 3 day passes, tourists will be issued a one day pass for the drive with a new reservation check-point in Apgar. Reservations will be needed to make the drive between 6a and 3p. If you take the drive from the St. Mary side, no reservation will be needed. The park entrance at Two Medicine will also be reservation free.
