Everything You Need To Know About Ice Fishing? From Montana Fish, Wildlife And Parks:
Safety First
Ice is never ever totally predictable and safe. No matter how much you think you know about ice things can change very quickly. Montana FWP says to NEVER get on the ice on a river.
How To Be Safe Ice Fishing
- Make sure you check the weather for the days you plan to go. Then check it again, to be sure
- Always let someone know where you're going
- Montana FWP recommends you bring someone with you
- Make sure someone has tried the ice BEFORE you. Never be the first on the ice
- Check the ice for thickness and clarity
- Be extra cautious if there is snow on the ice. It can hide danger
- Stay away from pressure ridges or large cracks
- Spread out if you have a large group
- As for the picture below, I agree with everything but the mouth maggots, for the love of GOD.

Ice Thickness Really Matters
You can check out how thick the ice is with your drill. Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks gives these recommendations for ice thickness:
- Under 4 inches, STAY OFF
- 4 inches, ice fishing or activities on foot
- 7 inches, snowmobile or ATV
- 10 inches, small car
- 12 inches, larger vehicle
I must say that it is just bat S**T CRAZY to bring a vehicle on the ice. No matter how thick the ice is. Really. It's a BAD IDEA.
