What Happens When A Loved One Has Dementia
My Mom Has Dementia
We've talked about this 3 times in the last month or so. I can't really remember exactly what day this all started, but I'd say a month, month and a half.
We LITERALLY were told mom has dementia about a weekish before I wrote the first article.
Here they are, in order of being written:
What? You Need To Pay More To Be Assisted When Living In Assisted Living?
Finding Compassion When Caring For The Elderly
There Are Stages Of Dementia Care Planning
- What? My mom/dad has dementia?
- What? How can it cost more to get assisted care in an assisted care facility? These rooms are freakishly small.
- What? Thank you so much for your help.
- What? In? The? Favorite Fword?
So far, these are my stages. This week (and the end of last week) is when we entered the WTF phase.
This What Happened To My Mom This Week In The Elder Care System In Great Falls
Immediately on being told Mom had dementia, I was told I needed to get her on some kind of assisted living social security ASAP because it takes 3 months most of the time, had to get her on waiting lists for assisted living facilities, had to get power of attorney for everything not just medical, SELL ALL OF HER THINGS AND GIVE THE MONEY TO THE UNITED STATES (spend down), maintain her regular apartment, take care of her cat and so on.
This has been going on since the middle or end of June.
I FINALLY got mom into a memory care ward and felt fairly safe. For EXACTLY one week.
After being told literally EVERY DAY that mom has dementia and can NEVER GO BACK TO HER APARTMENT,
I was told insurance only paid for a week and they were sending her home.
Should I repeat that?
Sure, it's just so danged unbelievable, let me tell you again, I was told insurance only paid for a week and they were sending her home.
(Unless I wrote a check for $11,100 to pay for ONE MONTH in ADVANCE) I said to them she has dementia and they threw their arms in the air.
So, after living on the edge for 4 days, they brought mom back to her independent living apartment Monday afternoon just after 5pm.
The best part was asking if we could bring Mom's checkbook because they can't let her leave without paying $370 for the ONE DAY she was in there that her insurance decided not to pay.
Apparently she doesn't have ENOUGH dementia. Or, they just want to up the chances of the elderly dying before the government pays up.
Remember, my mom has a pretty nice retirement. Imagine what happens to people with nothing.
Yesterday, I Got A Call Telling Me Mom Needs To Be In Memory Care
The DAY AFTER they sent her home to her apartment. With NO help lined up for the many medical necessities she has.
God help us all.
