Two Montana Counties Confirm Deer Ticks Have Been Spotted

From KRTV:

Both Sheridan County and Dawson County in Montana have reported spotting deer ticks in 2025.

One of the blacklegged ticks was found on a dog, and the other by crews who were doing tick surveillance near a lake.

Deer ticks/blacklegged ticks are known for spreading Lyme disease to humans. These ticks are considerably smaller than the kind we're used to seeing in Montana.

The Rocky Mountain wood tick and American dog tick are the most common ticks in Montana. These type of ticks are known for spreading tularemia, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and Colorado tick fever, none of which are good.

How To Stay Safe From Ticks

  • Wear clothes treated with permethrin. It's very effective in preventing ticks
  • Simply tuck your pants into your socks. As easy as this sounds, it's one of the most important and effective things you can do to protect yourself
  • Light colored clothes make it easier to see if a tick has gotten on you
  • Stay out of dense vegetation

Once, I was on an outing with a friend, and we stopped at the Marias River pull-out on the way to Shelby. We went down to see what there was to see. We saw some small bear tracks and the pretty blue things on top of the tall grass. My friend let me know that they were tick eggs. EEK! Of course, we got out of there that second. What did we do next? Checked each other for ticks.
