Montana Is Bear Country

This is a good reminder to always be bear aware.

Here are some great ways to avoid bear encounters in Montana:

  • Carry bear spray and be prepared to use it. Having it doesn't matter if you can't use it quickly
  • Travel in groups whenever possible and make a bit of noise, just regular talking and such. The bears don't want to be around you either, so they'll most likely leave where they hear you
  • Stay away from animal carcasses
  • Follow food storage orders from wherever you're camping or recreating
  • Keep garbage, bird feeders, pet food and other things that attract bears in a sturdy, secure building
  • Never intentionally feed bears. That is essentially killing them because they grow accustomed to human food and will eventually have to be put down

It's important to note that while certain areas have higher bear populations, bears are wild animals with unpredictable behaviors. Encounters can happen anywhere in bear country, and the best defense is always preparedness: carrying bear spray, making noise while hiking, and securing food and trash.
