You Just Saw Someone Shoplifting. Would You Tell Or Help?
Last time my mom and I went shopping, my mom saw someone shoplifting. She didn't do anything because they had a small child with them, and she was worried what might happen.
The whole conversation got me thinking about what I'd do if I saw someone shoplifting.
I'd LIKE to think I'd yell, "Stop! Thief!" and be a good citizen. Chances are slim that I'd be that brave. The reasons are a couple fold;
- A lot of people have conceal carry in Montana. I try to keep my mouth to myself right now as people seem so volatile. Mass shootings every week along with the economy and general attitude of America right now, I just leave people alone. Say something someone doesn't like, and you could end up dead in the heat of the moment.
- I don't know their circumstances. Depending on what I saw them trying to steal, I may step up and pay for it for them. I'm talking about food, diapers, baby food, medicine and feminine hygiene products. I probably couldn't buy them a huge supply, but it's better than a shoplifting charge.
I really feel that most of the time when people are stealing the above mentioned items, it's out of desperation, not the thrill of it all. I think if I could help someone out that way I would.
For me, it all comes down to what they're stealing. Jewelry or new clothes and the like? I wouldn't yell but I'd go find an employee to watch them. Food or medicine? I'd see what I could do to help them.
