The Blackfoot River

The Blackfoot River is the one the world has seen Brad Pitt fly fishing in the movie "A River Runs Through It".  Before the movie, The Blackfoot River was a Montana secret, after the movie, it made fly fishing and Montana a destination of adventure seekers from around the world.

It's Great To Float

It's a very popular river for floating, paddling and rafting enthusiasts.  The degree of intensity varies a lot on this river, so it's best to do your research and consult a guide before hitting the water.

The Fishing Is Fantastic

Big Sky Fishing says it's excellent for Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout fly fishing in one of the most beautiful settings on Earth.

From Origin to Lincoln, it's said there's a 22 mile stretch that is pretty narrow and shallow so it's hard for fish to survive, so the fishing is less than stellar.

From Lincoln to Mineral Hill Fishing Access Site, there's a 25 mile stretch of river that isn't floated too much and is in a more forested area.  Wade fishing is recommended and you'll find mostly Brown Trout.

Mineral Hill FAS to Cedar Meadows FAS, an 18 mile stretch of the river, access is hit or miss and there's only one fishing access.

Cedar Meadows FAS to River Junction FAS, a 12 mile stretch of the river, access is spotty and you'll find no designated fishing access.  This piece of the river is dominated by Brown Trout, but you will happen upon some Rainbow Trout, as well.

River Junction to Clearwater Crossing, this section is loaded with Rainbow Trout, but the terrain varies a lot.  After spring run-off, The Blackfoot River joins Rock Creek and is one of the best places in the state for dry fly fishing.

Clearwater Crossing to Johnsrud Park, here you'll find rocks and boulders and even some whitewater.  It offers great pocket fishing and is one of the most popular spots on the river.

Johnsrud Park to Clark Fork, this section offers great access and several access sites.  Here you'll catch both Brown and Rainbow Trout
