Recently, I was reminded of the importance of a small town wave while driving in Montana.  When you get into bigger towns, the wave doesn't happen unless you're thanking another driver, so it's easy to get out of practice and forget your manners when driving through a small town.

The rules of a small town wave from Art Montana:

• The wave only needs to come from the driver
• Know when to wave.  Basic rule of thumb, the more rural the road, the more you should have your waving finger ready
• Waving doesn't mean you're best friends, it means the driver knows their manners.  Always be ready to return the hello
• The style of the wave DOES matter.  The normal wave in Montana is the 2 finger wave, your pointer finger and middle finger lifted straight up from the steering wheel.  This is the only wave you really need to know if you're new to Montana.  It will work for every waving occasion. The longer you live here, the more waves you'll learn, and you can modify to fit the situation.  For beginners, we like to keep it at the 2 finger wave to start out.  Keep in mind a nod is not a good response for the driving wave.  Keep that for your friends you see in the store.

This will also work for the 2 fingered wave.  To me, it shouts you may be distracted, so both fingers got in on the action just to make sure you're covered.
