I couldn't believe it when I stumbled across this information from the US attorney's office in Montana.
But a man has admitted to stealing hundred-year-old letters written by Nancy Russell and selling them on eBay.
Theft of Historical CM Russell Artifacts
Santa Fe, New Mexico, resident Brian Anthony D’Ambrosio was recently accused of stealing historic artifacts from the Montana Historical Society.
Guilty Plea and Legal Proceedings
The 49-year-old D’Ambrosio ended up pleading guilty to stealing the historic items.
The wife of renowned Western artist Charlie M Russell reportedly owned some of the historic items taken.
These items were described as letters written by Nancy Russell.
The thefts took place from April 2022 to September 2023.
Criminal Activities Unveiled
According to the court documents, D’Ambrosio unlawfully took artifacts from the Montana Historical Society in Helena under the guise of conducting research.
The value of the items taken is over $5000
Many items are described as over a century old and were part of museum archives and held for cultural and historical purposes.
D’Ambrosio ended up selling the stolen items on eBay and making a profit.
Potential Penalties
D’Ambrosio faces a maximum of 10 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and three years of supervised release.
Currently, his sentencing is set for November 13, 2024.
The case was investigated through collaboration with the Helena police department.
