Canine Bomb Sniffers Put to Test at Malmstrom AFB in Great Falls
We've all seen a movie where the star of the film needs the help of his furry four-legged friend to save the world by sniffing something important out. Those scenarios really do happen in real life, as canine units across the state have taken down drug dealers and more.
Several of those hero dogs were put to the test at Malmstrom Air Force Base (MAFB) in Great Falls, Montana recently. The training dealt with real-life scenarios with handlers and dogs navigating a series of tests for explosive materials.

The training involved several agencies from across Montana including the 341st Security Forces Agency at MAFB, the Montana Highway Patrol, the University of Montana, Flathead County and also the National Institute of Health.

The explosive detection training allows for "handlers, and their K-9 partners the opportunity to refine detection techniques, strengthen communication and build confidence for real-world security operations" according to the press release.
Canine Units Shine When Given the Opportunity to Find the Prize in Great Falls
Units made their way through different scenarios at the base, looking for explosive ordinance that had been placed earlier.
It wasn't just the German Shephard that would also shine during the training:
Once the animals were able to identify the explosives, excitement for the find and a treat were definitely warranted.
