Hamilton Man Gets Two Years in Prison for His Illegal Weapons Stash

Law enforcement continues to put the hammer down on crime as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, District Court of Montana.

This time, they're putting away a former felon who had quite a few firearms.

It only took a one-day trial for a jury to find 46-year-old Shawn Ryan Cowan guilty of unlawfully possessing a firearm.

And if you're wondering why the decision came so quick, you've got two factors to consider.

For starters, Cowan's been convicted of multiple felonies and according to the Gun Control Act, it is "unlawful for certain categories of persons to ship, transport, receive, or possess firearms or ammunition"... and in this case, it's formerly convicted felons.

He'll be facing two years of prison time followed by three years of supervised release.

What Felonies Did Cowan Have?

I would expect some people feel like two years might be a little lengthy but if you consider the felonies Cowan has on his records, it makes a little sense.

Officials say he was previously convicted of "aggravated kidnapping, burglary, and possession of dangerous drugs in Montana and so was required to register as a violent offender for life."

Authorities shared they seized several types of ammunition and a whole lotta firearms including:

• Derya Arms (Derya Silah Sanayi) TM22-A-18, .22 cal. rifle
• Marlin Firearms Co. 20, .22 cal. rifle
• High Standard Sentinel, .22 cal. revolver
• North American Arms NAA22, .22 cal. revolver
• Smith & Wesson 18, .22 cal. revolver
• Derya Arms (Derya Silah Sanayi) VRPA40, 12-gauge shotgun
• Heritage Mfg. Inc. Rough Rider, .22 cal. revolver
