Will Great Falls Police Call You Because of Your Doorbell?

I love technology and all the really cool things that it brings into my life. Scheduling appointments online is a breeze, finding information on anything is only a click away, weather forecasts, shopping, the list is endless.

One of the technology gadgets that has made its way into our home is in the form of a doorbell. While there are several different makers of these, we chose one of the most popular companies out there, Ring. I didn't realize what I was getting into when I signed up for it though.

Why Did You Install a Camera Doorbell on Your Home?

As the pandemic occurred, some businesses chose to have employees work from home. My wife was one of those. Since I was going to be at work, we decided a little extra protection of knowing what was happening at our front door was needed. Enter in that little camera and doorbell. We love it. Don't get me wrong. It has served its purpose well, and continues to do so.

But did you know that what your camera records could lead to slight trouble? What happens if a crime is recorded by your doorbell? Are you obligated to share that video with the police?

Ring Will No Longer Allow Police to Request Footage Video

In a surprise announcement by the Amazon owned Ring, they will no longer use the "Request for Assistance" tool as of this week. Police departments and other public safety agencies could request and receive video that had been captured on the devices using the Neighbors app included with Ring when signing up for the service.

Police departments will still have access to the app itself, and be able to post warnings, informational updates and more, but won't be able to request video from private parties. Police will still be able to request a warrant to access video if needed.
