Nearly 12-Thousand Need to Update Voter Information in Cascade County

The National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (also known as the "NVRA" or "motor voter law") sets forth specific voter registration requirements concerning elections for federal office.

Section 8 of the NVRA contains requirements concerning the administration of voter registration by States and requires States to implement procedures to maintain accurate and current voter registration lists.

The Act requires States to conduct a general voter registration list maintenance program that makes a reasonable effort to remove ineligible persons from the voter rolls by reason of the person's death, or a change in the residence of the registrant outside of the jurisdiction, in accordance with procedures set forth in the NVRA. The list maintenance program must be uniform, nondiscriminatory and in compliance with the Voting Rights Act.

According to Cascade County Clerk and Recorder Sandra Merchant, Cascade County has begun this process, and the first notice has been sent out.

"Our county voter rolls, as reported by the Secretary of State, reveals 11,884 currently registered voters who fit these criteria," said Merchant.

"If no response is received back to our office within 30 days a second NVRA notice will be issued, Said Merchant. "If no response is received back within another 30 days the voter will be inactivated as part of maintaining accurate voter registration lists."

If you receive the above-described notice, follow the instructions to complete it and return it to the Elections Office at PO Box 2305, Great Falls, MT, 59403.

This will ensure you are not removed from the official voter registration list.
