Missoula Woman Stabs Boyfriend Nine Times, Charged With Homicide

Missoula, MT (KGVO-AM News) - On April 29, 2023, Missoula Police Department Officers responded to a residence in the 2000 block of Mount Avenue for a report of a female trying to stab a male. Officers arrived on the scene and a male, later identified as J.D., opened the door and came outside.  

According to court documents, blood was coming from his chest area, down his arm, and from his back. A female, later identified as 32-year-old Laila Alvarado, was observed standing in the kitchen area armed with a knife in her right hand.  

Alvarado Refuses Officer's Commands

An officer told her to drop the knife, but she refused and said officers would have to shoot her. Alvarado then retreated further into the home and would not come out. The officer prioritized care for J.D. who was taken a short distance away to meet up with medical responders.

At the hospital, J.D. said Alvarado stabbed him. The male then passed out and started convulsing before any more questions could be asked. J.D. was then taken into surgery. A surgeon later told an officer that J.D. sustained nine stab wounds to his back, chest, and one on his hand. Court documents indicated they believed he would survive.  

Alvarado barricaded herself in the home and a perimeter was set up. Officers located Alvarado’s phone number and after making contact with her, she eventually came out of the home without further incident. Officers cleared the residence to make sure no one else was inside. A folding pocketknife with blood on it was observed in plain view on a kitchen island.  

Alvarado Speaks With a Detective

Detectives later interviewed Alvarado. She said she and J.D. got into an argument. Alvarado said she became violent, grabbed a folding pocketknife, and placed it in her underwear. The knife fell out of her underwear onto the floor and J.D. ran to the kitchen to call 911.  

Alvarado told the detective that she wanted to stop J.D. from calling 911 and from breaking up with her. She allegedly cornered him between the sink and stove and began stabbing him. She stopped stabbing him only when law enforcement arrived on the scene. According to court documents, Alvarado admitted that her intentions included killing J.D. 

Alvarado was taken into custody and transported to the Missoula County Detention Center. Alvarado is currently being charged with felony attempted deliberate homicide. Her bail was set at $500,000 and the case was filed directly to District Court. The investigation is ongoing.
