What You Could See Hanging in a Pasture in Montana

Growing up on a central Montana ranch has lent itself to some weird things following me since becoming one of the "city folk".  Being aware of my surroundings, noticing something that is out of place in a parking lot or even on a desk seems to be my secret power of sorts.

For the most part in rural Montana, things don't tend to change a lot.  And while I continue to visit my humble beginnings in Judith Basin County as often as possible, a recent trip had me doing a double take and rubber necking my way down a country road I could drive with my eyes closed to this day.  Something that wasn't where it should be right next to the road in a neighbor's pasture.

What You Could See Hanging in a Pasture in Montana

When you leave your childhood home, you have to expect that things will change.  Families move, ranches become consolidated or perhaps bought by someone new to the area.  Buildings collapse or repurposed for something different than you might remember.

Most of the time these things don't really throw me off when I get on to the familiar roads I grew up driving every day for school or ranch work.  I might mention it to my wife or simply put it in the memory bank for the next time I come by.  But different animals in a pasture?  Yep, I definitely notice those.

When Did Texas Move to My Old Stomping Grounds in Geyser, MT?

Odd animals in a pasture are always going to catch my attention.  And travelling through to my parents' ranch last weekend, I had to stop and grab a photo:

It seems like Texas has moved into central Montana.  Because I sure don't remember any of these guys hanging around growing up.  It had me doing a double take and starting to look for a rancher with a new Cadillac.

Kidding aside, I have to admit I was pretty awestruck at the spread on the horns of these cattle.

And they were more than happy to pose for the camera once the dust from the gravel had settled.
