Avoiding Certain Colors or Scents Can Be the First Wave of Defense

In many cases, pests can be attracted to certain colors or even particular perfumes that you might be wearing.  For example, one of our 5 common pests are bees.  Wearing overly bright colors or perfume can attract them directly to you.

Certain scents however can have very positive effects to keeping pests from invading our homes or backyards.

  • To take care of a moth problem, make satchels of dried rosemary and mint or lavender.  You can place them in closets or drawers to help mothproof garments.
  • Flies can be handled by planting basil, bay leaves, cloves or mint near your home to discourage them.  Be sure to cover all wet garbage also.

Mosquitos and Wasps - The Bane of Every BBQ in Montana

Is any backyard get together a party if it doesn't have mosquitos or the crazed yellowjacket flying wildly around food and friends?  To take care of them, try these tricks for each one:

  • Mosquitos - Clean away any stagnant water, including your gutters or downspouts.  Citronella candles will help as will oil of citronella in a bottle used to spray areas.
  • Wasps - Use a small-mouthed plastic bottle and position it in an area that is downwind of the spot that you wish to keep clear.  Pour fruit juice into the bottle.  Wasps will crawl in and won't be able to get back out.
