Original 1890’s Evans Riceville Road Is Now Open for Travel

As fire restrictions become implemented in areas across Montana because of dry and dangerous conditions, it is hard to remember that earlier this year we were faced with huge amounts of rainfall.

In June of 2026, the popular Evans Riceville Road in the Belt Mountains near Great Falls was inundated with enough rain that it caused a major hiccup for recreationists.  The roadway became washed out after rains caused a slide in a portion of it.  Since that time the roadway has been closed.

Original 1890's Evans Riceville Road Is Now Open for Travel

An alternate route for the road, the original 1890's roadway, has been under review with the Cascade County Public Works department and the landowner.  Since the original road runs through private property, the department needed to analyze historical records.

After a diligent review, Public Works determined that the roadway had not been abandoned and was still considered a county road open to the public for use.  The alternative route will be used as road work and repairs are made to the replacement 1960's roadway.

Motorists Advised Driving with Caution on Original 1890's Eden Riceville Road

The "new" alternative route will allow for access to residents and the traveling public, but caution is being advised for motorists wishing to travel back in time on the 1890's road.  It might get a little bumpy at times.

Cascade Public Works said "Travelers are urged to use extreme caution when using the alternative route. The road may have conditions that differ from a regularly maintained roadway, and motorists should drive according to current road and weather conditions, remain alert, and use appropriate caution at all times."  Travelers are also warned about livestock being present on roads and ditches in the area.
